What’s in a name?

stopphysics defined: a definition…

While “stopphysics, llc.” was founded in 2000, I created the word “stopphysics” in 1997 while still in journalism school at the University of Oregon. The word emerged after long nights in the wetlab making prints (yup…that’s pre-digital) and pondering the terminology and processes of photography…

A “stop” is a photographic unit of measurement, a term as second-nature to photographers as inches are to carpenters. When a photographer adjusts the camera’s shutter speed or aperture, he does so according to a consistent measurement called a “stop.” On my first camera — a (35mm film) Nikon F3 — those f-stops were marked on the aperature ring of the lens by a red or white dot…a common sight on most lenses. The stopphysics logo is an abstract of that ring and its signature stop-dot.

Everything about the science of photography, and the subject matter and activities I enjoy most, is based in physics. From the science of light waves and particle movement, to the science that hurls a surfer beachward, physics is the story of our world’s phenomena.
